From last week's class, I learned some important things about designing an app interface and got some suggestions to improve my app design.
Here are the things I learned from this app design project:
1. Consistency: it includes the colors, fonts, shapes and every element you used in the app. Don't use too many different design elements in the app, it will confuse your users or make the app look messy;
2. Space: leave enough space around your blocks, especially the margin of the screen. When I was doing this, I would remind myself that I need to leave more space at the top because there is always a time and battery bar at the top of the screen. Also, try to make the space between each block remain the same;
3. Size: the right size of every element in the app is very important. And this is the most tricky thing in the design process because you won't find out if those are the right sizes until you see your design on a real phone. I found the right font size for title would be around 36, and for long texts would be around 30 or 24. For other elements like pictures, bottoms, icons, etc., I was adjusting the sizes by putting my phone on the computer screen to compare their sizes. Even though I did that, I still need to redo them after I saw some odds from the phone vision.
4. Alignment: try to line up everything especially things close to the margins.
About my design, the good part was Dan said he liked my design and the arrangement of the contents in the app leaves enough white space, and he said it is important to line up the elements which I did, and the app was easy to use. But, he thought I used too many yellow in my design which might confuse the users about the funtions of each element. He suggested I could replace the yellow color of some elements with another color, only use the yellow as the action indicator. He also mentioned the curves of the elements should remain the same.
Based on the suggestions, I made some changes to my design as below:
